1775 - Gay Shunga - Homoerotic Art - Passionate Kissing
c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.
Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions. Some minor wear, soiling, and a few pinholes. No backing. Please see and judge from the photos provided.
Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm
This passionate composition captures two male lovers locked in an intimate embrace beside a staircase, their intertwined bodies and close kiss rendered with remarkable tenderness and immediacy. Settei’s refined linework and balanced composition soften the explicit nature of the scene, creating an atmosphere that feels both deeply sensual and quietly poetic — a fine example of Edo-period nanshoku imagery at its most elegant and human.
