c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene - Samurai & Wakashu

A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.

Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery.  Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.

Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions.  Some minor wear, soiling, slight wormage, and a few pinholes.  No backing.  Please see and judge from the photos provided.

Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm

This evocative scene portrays a samurai and his youthful wakashu companion engaged in a deeply intimate embrace, with the presence of paired swords subtly reinforcing the warrior-class setting.  Framed by elegant robes and a quiet interior backdrop, Settei balances eroticism with refinement, capturing the emotional closeness and aesthetic sophistication that defined much of Edo-period nanshoku culture.  The composition possesses a calm, almost poetic atmosphere rarely found in later shunga works.
