1820 - K EISEN - Shunga Woodblock Print - Macabre Curse
Authentic Edo period original, c.1820, Japanese shunga erotic art woodblock print picture by Keisai EISEN (1790-1848). Shunga picture measures 27.5 cm x 21.7 cm. Very good colors and impressions. Condition is very good - if not mint! - with just minimal wear and soiling. No backing. It's extremely rare to get shungas from the Edo Period in such fine condition as this! Please see and judge from photos.
Odd, dark shunga scene of a woman who's adorning a candle headdress at night, while making love to a man outdoors. Although her intentions may be more sinister as it was said that when a woman desired to kill a man (for spurning her), she was to go to a shrine at 2 AM (the hour of the Ox) wearing a candle headdress and nail a straw figure of the man to the sacred tree. Is this the man she wishes to kill or another?
