1845 - UTAGAWA - Shunga Readers - Awabi
Authentic Edo period original, c.1845, Japanese erotic art shunga woodblock print picture by an artist of the UTAGAWA School. From the shunga series, Uotori (fish & bird) ajiwai (taste) kurabe (comparison). An interesting - and if not odd - shunga with each scene in the book comparing the sexual organs/acts of the lovers to either fish and/or birds. Hence, the animal cartouche at the top corner of each shunga picture. The author is Insuitei.
Shunga woodblock print picture measures 17.5 cm x 21.6 cm. Very good colors and impressions. Condition is very good with some light wear and soiling, wormage at bottom border. No backing. Please see and judge from photos.
Another great-looking shunga woodblock print picture of two lovers engaged in intercourse as shunga books are strewn about them. An awabi (abalone) and clams adorn the cartouche at top left.
