Authentic Edo period original, from the Kaei period (1848 - 1853), Japanese erotic art shunga woodblock print picture by Kunisada Utagawa (1786-1865). From the shunga series, Shunshoku Tamazoroi (An Assortment of Pleasure in Spring). Shunga picture measures 24.5 cm x 28.9 cm. Very good colors and impressions. Condition is decent with some wear, soiling, wormage, thin washi (Japanesse rice paper) backing. Please see and judge from photos.
A great scene from this highly-acclaimed series, Shunshoku Tamazoroi. During a rain storm at New Year's Eve, a fox procession is on their way to a particular tree near Oji Inari Shrine to receive new orders for the coming year. Like many native cultures of North America, the Japanese believed foxes to be super-natural trick creatures of this world and beyond.
