1880 - Shunga - Surimono X 2 - Dress Fondling
Lot of Two c.1880 Utagawa School Shunga Surimono
A beautiful pair of original shunga surimono from the Utagawa School, dating to c.1880. Both shunga woodblock print pictures feature intimate indoor scenes, richly detailed with the school’s signature bold linework, elaborate textile patterns, mica (metallic pigments), and dynamic color combinations.
The first depicts a couple in a moment of playful closeness, surrounded by fine furnishings and a delicately patterned interior. The second presents a romantic embrace set against a refined room with decorative panels and symbolic objects. Both works exhibit the Utagawa mastery of combining narrative intimacy with highly decorative compositions.
Measure 12 cm x 8.3 cm each. Condition across the pair is excellent for their age, with vivid, unfaded pigments, nice embossing, and attractive pigment bleed-through on the versos. Together, they form a visually and thematically harmonious set, ideal for collectors seeking authentic late-19th-century Japanese erotic prints with strong color and detail.
