A great shunga scene featuring the mythical Japanese deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, deeply aroused, chasing one another in the night sky. These legendary deities were associated with the stars Vega and Altair. According to Japanese ancient lore, the Milky Way divides these lovers, allowing them to come together just once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month (July 7th) in the traditional lunisolar calendar. See the original shunga artwork here.
About copperplate printing in Japan: Copperplate printing gained popularity in Japan during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, particularly in the Meiji period (1868-1912). It was introduced from the West and used for its ability to capture fine details, which woodblock printing couldn't achieve as easily. By the early 1900s, copperplate was commonly used alongside traditional woodblock methods, especially for detailed reproductions. This shunga picture, likely from 1905-1910, reflects this transition in Japanese printing techniques.
