SKU : kun549

Authentic original Meiji Period Kunichika Japanese Woodblock Print Picture

Artist:  Kunichika Toyohara (1835-1900)

Date:  Early Meiji Period, (c.1870)

Description: 100% genuine & authentic original Japanese woodblock print picture from the early Meiji Period.  Great colors and excellent impressions!  Condition is good with some light wear, tiny bit of piece missing from mid centre-left edge.  Ohter than that, very clean and no backing.  Please see and judge from photos.

Size of woodblock print picture:  24 cm x 36 cm (Oban size)

A very cool & foreboding Japanese woodblock print scene of a thieving ruffian out at night, up to 'something or other' with a sharp blade in his mouth.  In the background, a couple of cranes escape into the darkness; perhaps a bit of foreshadowing to the bloodshed that lies ahead.  The character pictured is actually based on an infamous Japanese thief who was eventually caught and executed by decapitation.
