Rare - 1827 - Kunisada - Shunga - Erotic Woodblock Print - Pleasure Boat

SKU : xbu1705

Authentic Edo period original, c.1827, Japanese shunga erotic art woodblock print by Kunisada Utagawa (1786-1865).  From his highly coveted shunga series, Shunka shuto shiki no nagame (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter: Prospects for the Four Seasons).  Shunga picture measures 34 cm x 25.5 cm.  Great colors and impressions!  Also nice use of urushi-e (black lacquer), mica (metallic pigments), and gauffrage throughout the picture.  Condition is very good with some wear & soiling, two wormage spots at top border.  No backing.  Please see and judge from photos.

About this classic shunga series:  "Today one of Kunisada's most valued works, Shunka shuto shiki no nagame is exquisitely printed and would have been an expensive book to produce.  This indicates that it may have been a commission by a wealthy townsmen.  The appeal of this album lies in the clarity of the imagery, which is not cluttered by surrounding blocks of texts."

Excerpt from P.190 of Japanese Erotic Fantasies by Chris Uhlenbeck and Margarita Winkel.

A great antique shunga scene of a couple enjoying themselves on a pleasure boat.
