EXTREMELY SCARCE - 1810 - Octopus Shunga - Awabi Diver Girl
Original and very scarce, 1st edition Japanese erotic art shunga woodblock print picture from the Edo Period, c.1810.
The artist is likely either Kitagawa Utamaro (1754–1806) or Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). From my own personal & extensive experience, the artwork does look more of the Utamaro-fashion than Hokusai. However, the octopus & seafood gang-theme definitely screams of the Hokusai influence. In any case, it's definitely from a quality woodblock print artist of the Edo Period, while the paper and artistic-style clearly show it's from the c.1800 -1810 era. Thus, whether it's by Utamaro, Hokusai, or one of their esteemed pupils, it deserves its own praise, not just for its scarcity, but also the quality of the artwork! Moreover, this piece is so rare that it is not only my first time coming across it, but not even Marijn of shungagallery has it featured in his extensive octo-themed shunga article here (which virtually has everything else covered): https://shungagallery.com/hokusais-the-dream-of-the-fishermans-wife/

I truly thought I had come across all of the octopus-themed shungas, but clearly I was wrong. Here is your opportunity to own perhaps the most popular-themed-shunga works out there! Not to mention you won't likely come across this particular artwork again. It's also fairly comical as we have the awabi diving girl swimming away with her bounty, while being pursued by a type of seafood gang, the octopus leading the way, feeling his way to the prize as his fishy friends look on in awe and a bit dumbfounded. The old Edo Period artistic waves are always a nice touch too!
